Cal State Fullerton alumna and travel blogger, Kaitlyn McCaffery, was discharged from the neurological intensive care unit at Stanford last week where she was treated for traumatic injuries incurred in a motor-scooter accident in July 2021 in Bali, Indonesia.
McCaffery was transferred to a respiratory rehabilitation unit in Santa Clara where specialists will focus on improving her respiratory status.
“She went from a 1% chance of survival to this. We still have a long road ahead but today we celebrate this victory,” Jennifer McCaffery, Kaitlyn’s sister, said in an Instagram post on Oct. 19.

Aug. 22 – Update from Kaitlyn’s family…
Kaitlyn has been safely evacuated from Bali to the Stanford Hospital Neurocritical Care Unit, where she is being evaluated and treated by many specialists.
The doctors at Stanford have already uncovered much more detail as it relates to Kaitlyn’s injuries. My good friend Dena started this GoFundMe and we never expected to garner such an incredible response. We are so grateful for everyone’s prayers and donations that made this possible. We are able to be by Kaitlyn’s side, discuss medical developments with the doctors in real time, and have a great deal of confidence in the care she is receiving.
The cost of the transport was $262,904.00, which was raised due to the generosity of all the amazing donors here on GoFundMe. Other funds raised have contributed to her medical insurance deductibles in Bali and any additional funds raised will go toward her continued medical expenses and rehabilitation efforts. I attached a picture of the crew and plane that transported Kaitlyn home.
This will be a long road to recovery and we are so grateful for each and every one of you. We’d like to thank the Sanglah Hospital in Bali for stabilizing Kaitlyn enough to travel home, and International SOS for pulling off an amazing air evacuation. There have been many challenges along the way and International SOS has exceeded all expectations, communicated with their medivac team, the doctors in Bali, and the Transfer Center at Stanford Hospital. We are relieved that Kaitlyn is at Stanford receiving world-class care.

Aug. 9 – CSUF Entrepreneurship Alum Kaitlyn McCaffery ’16 is clinging to life in a coma after a horrific scooter crash in Bali, Indonesia.
Since graduation, Kaitlyn has been traveling the world and documenting her journey to over 50 countries on the Instagram page @fearlesstravelers
“Two young men found her on a remote road, alone, unconscious, broken and bleeding. Without their help, she surely would have died,” said Kaitlyn’s family. “Although Kaitlyn was smart to buy international medical insurance, the insurance company has refused to pay for the cost to evacuate her to California.”
After her insurance company “refused” to bring her home, her desperate friends and relatives have tried to raise the money themselves.

The cost to evacuate her using an experienced international medevac company, such as Air Med or International SOS, is extremely daunting.
“Due to the distance and Covid-related border closures, it is estimated to be be approx. $250,000 US Dollars,” her family explained.
The family has raised almost enough to fly Kaitlyn home, with the fundraiser on GoFundMe sitting at $226,000 at the time of writing. They are hoping to fly her to a major trauma hospital in Northern California to undergo treatment.
Thankfully, Kaitlyn has many loving friends who are by her side in Bali and are providing the family with updates around the clock.
