Ashok Patel Teaches CSUF Startup Residents about Startup Growth

Ashok Patel (right) hosts a seminar for entrepreneurs at the CSUF Startup Incubator office in Irvine

Last Wednesday, Ashok Patel was gracious enough to come in to the CSUF Startup Incubator office in Irvine and talk about some of the key insights he has learned over the years as an entrepreneur and growth expert. One of the attendees at Ashok’s talk was John Barton. John is a one of the entrepreneurs that we are helping go from concept to launch at the CSUF Startup Incubator and he wanted to share some of the things that he learned from this talk and to discuss his business a little as well.

Read John’s notes below and if you are interested in attending any of our talks in the future please go to http://bit.ly/CSUFEntrepreneurEvents for a full list of our events, competitions (like the Titan Fast Pitch this Saturday), and office hours.

John’s Notes on Ashok Patel’s Seminar

This past Wednesday, I had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Patel’s presentation on licensing and entrepreneurship. He started out with a Winners Creed that I really took to heart. The creed was about believing that “you can” is half the battle and that if you think “you can’t” then you won’t.

He also spoke about how to draft a licensing agreement and the necessary things that need to be stated. He went in depth about his career with Sunkist and how he was able to build relationships through licensing the brand.

John Talks about his Startup

This presentation really resonated with me because of my recent pivot with my own company, Point ‘N Save. Just a few weeks ago I pivoted away from a direct to consumer model to a licensing model.

I originally developed an app geared towards students. The app showed discounts for students and rewarded them for choosing wholesome entertainment. However, after a few months I was encouraged to try another path with my technology.

John Heaps Glowing Praise on the CSUF Startup Incubator!

With the help of the Cal State Fullerton Startup Incubator, I was able to craft a pitch around my new licensing model that secured my first investment! My technology is white label software that allows guests of hotels to view their exclusive discounts for staying at the hotel. Guests can also text message the front desk for any questions or concerns.

I am proud to be a part of the incubator and the mentors and staff has helped me pivot to a more successful licensing model!
