Sigma Upsilon Mu's 8 Hour Business Challenge


Here’s a great competition for CSUF students that is run by CSUF students, namely our entrepreneurship co-ed fraternity Sigma Upsilon Mu, called the 8 Hour Business Challenge. I can try to explain what this competition is to you but they have already done so on their event page (which is where you need to register if you want to compete). Here is most of it but make sure to go to the event page for all the information and to register! The event is this Friday, September 9 so make sure to act fast.

Are you a passionate entrepreneur willing to challenge yourself to develop a business in 8 hours? Want to compete against students from Southern California for a chance to earn up to $1000 dollars in winnings?

If so, then you should participate in Sigma Upsilon Mu’s 8 Hour Business Challenge. In 8 hours, students will form teams, brainstorm innovative business ideas, conduct cost/profit analysis, conduct market research, validate a business concept, create a website, develop a commercial, and pitch that idea to a panel of judges.

The Challenge

At the challenge, you will form into teams, come up with a business idea, validate that idea, create a prototype, do cost/profit analysis, develop an elevator pitch, develop a commercial, and develop a business pitch. The entire event is scheduled and designed to allow you to develop the business concept in 8 hours. You will be following a very detailed process, and mentors will be there guiding the teams. Once the 8 hours are up, you will pitch your business plan to judges, and a room full of entrepreneurs, investors, and business professionals.

There is a $15 dollar fee to participate. That will cover food, drinks and material for the participants.

The rules are simple:

  • The ideas must be original
  • Each team must work independently
  • Each team member must work with his assigned team
  • Each team must present a 60-second “elevator pitch”, a five minute pitch, and a video advertisement that will be uploaded to our YouTube Channel.

  • Laptop
  • Notebook
  • Pen

8 Hour Business Schedule

8:00AM:   Contestant Registration and Assignments, teams that are formed prior to the competition are allowed to keep members. Individuals who are not a member of a team are assigned to a team.

9:00AM:   First Sprint, teams must brainstorm their ideas. Specifically this process involves developing an original concept and testing it. During this phase, members of the Center for Entrepreneurship will be available to provide guidance and mentoring.

12:30PM: Break

1:00PM:   Second Sprint, teams must create their pitches, prototypes, and video for judging.

5:00PM:   Meet and Greet, in association with our sponsors is a business-focused meet-and-greet. This meet-and-greet is for local businesses and challenge audience to get to know each other. Students from business clubs will be at the event meeting with businesses that are tabling at the event.

6:00PM:  Contest Begins:

  • Round One:              60 Second Pitch
  • Round Two:             Commercial
  • Round Three:          Five Minute Pitch, followed by five minute Q&A with Judges

8:00PM:   Awards Presentation, Awards are given out and Promotional considerations.

Opportunities will be awarded, by check, as well as other promotional gifts and non-cash opportunities.
