Making A Social Impact: What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Social Entrepreneurship is an approach to solving social problems that uses entrepreneurial principles to create innovative and sustainable solutions. Unlike traditional charity or philanthropy, social entrepreneurship seeks to address the root causes of social issues, rather than just treating their symptoms. This is achieved by applying business principles to social problems, such as using market mechanisms to create sustainable and self-sufficient solutions.

Social entrepreneurs are individuals or organizations that identify a social problem and create a business model that generates revenue, while at the same time addresses that problem. By taking a sustainable, market-based approach to social issues, social entrepreneurship has the potential to make a long-term, meaningful impact in a variety of areas, such as poverty, education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

At the Center for Entrepreneurship at California State University, Fullerton, we believe that social entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool for creating a better world. That’s why we provide education, resources, and support to aspiring social entrepreneurs, helping them to turn their ideas into sustainable and impactful ventures. Whether you are a student, a community member, or an established entrepreneur, we invite you to join us in creating positive change through social entrepreneurship.

The 90 Second Business Pitch

Why 90 seconds?

We give you 90 seconds because that’s about the amount of time you have when you first meet someone to get them interested in your concept. Whether your concept is for a business or a non-profit, what matters most is that it is addressing something that can have a positive impact on the world.

What should be included in the 90-second pitch?

An effective pitch should have three sections: the problem you are addressing, your solution to that problem, and the overall business opportunity.

The problem you are addressing

When we review pitches, we look for entrepreneurs who have identified a real problem that needs addressing. Ideally, the entrepreneur has talked about the issue with many people or has experienced the problem personally.

Your solution to that problem

Once you have identified a problem, you need to come up with a solution and be able to explain it clearly and simply. Your solution should adequately address the problem you have identified and be doable.

The opportunity

Now that you have explained the problem and your solution, you need to communicate the overall opportunity. If you are proposing a business, talk about the number of people who would buy your product or service. If your concept is for a non-profit, talk about how many people you can have a positive impact on. Explain why you are the right fit for this opportunity and how you plan on leveraging your resources to start and grow your business.

General tips

Pitches that do better are made by people who are confident and passionate about their concepts. For the preliminary round, record your pitch as many times as you like to get the perfect delivery. For the finals round, practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the more relaxed, natural, and confident you will sound in person.

Rules for 90 second pitch

  • Since the Preliminary Round is a virtual competition, you can record your pitch as many times as you like in order to get the perfect delivery (You will still only submit one video, the best one).
  • Pitches should be in the format of a face-to-face pitch.
  • 90 second maximum for pitches
  • Please make your video upload either public (everyone can see it) or unlisted (only people with the link will be able to see it) but do not make it private (only you will be able to see a video that is private)
  • No PowerPoint slides, poster boards, white boards, CGI, music, screengrabs, etc.
  • One continuous take, no editing
  • If you are pitching as a team (we recommend 2 max because of the 90 second time limit) then you and your teammates can participate in the video and presentation.
